The 2nd Annual Mary Ann Wallace-Pangburn Manteca Unified Student Trust All-star Event will take place Saturday at Sierra High.
The event will bring together 175 student-athletes from all 21 area middle schools, and will feature seven basketball games, a 3-point shooting contest, a raffle, numerous giveaways and performances by the Art of Dance Company, the Sierra High cheerleading squad and a Tahitian dance group hailing from Komure School.
“All proceeds benefit MUST,” said Johnny Aguilar, who, alongside Sierra athletic director Greg Leland, has coordinated the event for the past three seasons. “We want to keep the after-school sports programs for the kids. Sports and academics go hand-in-hand.”
Wallace-Pangburn, a former standout athlete at Manteca High and a beloved teacher in the Manteca Unified School District, passed away last year, ironically on the same Saturday as the first annual all-star event played in her honor.
This year, Wallace-Pangburn’s family will be in attendance and will be introduced during halftime of the North vs. South 8th Grade boys game which starts at 3 p.m.
“Mary Ann was an icon in the community,” Aguilar said. “She was a big-time athlete at Manteca and an exceptional teacher. She was very well liked.”
Lathrop High JROTC will be on hand and will present the colors during the Star Spangled Banner, which will be performed prior to each game by different MUSD students.
“There will be plenty to eat,” Aguilar said. “We’ll also be having 3-point shooting during halftime of each game to give away free pizzas.”
Cost of the event is $3 for adults and $2 for children.
Games start at 9 a.m., and the 3-point shooting contest begins at 10 a.m. in the small gym.
