Ripon High knew that to find a seat in the Sac-Joaquin Section playoffs it would need a glorious finish to the Trans Valley League season.

Those hopes ended Thursday when the Indians could not overcome a sluggish start in a 5-1 loss to Orestimba in Newman.

Ripon spotted an unexpectedly dangerous Orestimba squad two goals early on and the damage was done.

“We were not ready to play when we came out,” Ripon High head coach Jamie DeBruyn said. “We made a lot of mistakes on the back line and they were able to capitalize with two early goals.

“After that we were grasping for straws; not what I was expecting at all.”

Ripon (4-5-3 TVL, 8-11-4 overall) had several opportunities to try and better its chances of making the playoffs, but the Indians dropped must-have games to Hughson and Hilmar and their 0-0 tie with Escalon didn’t improve their chances.

Orestimba held a 5-0 lead over Ripon late, before Jared Berglund put in the Indians’ only goal in the season-ending loss.

Southern League
Gustine 5, Ripon Christian 1
The Knights closed off a challenging first season in Southern League play, dropping their finale to the Gustine Redskins Thursday.

Ripon Christian (2-12 SL, 4-17 overall) had a tough time getting on track in its new league, registering its only two wins against Turlcok Christian. Gustine held a slim 1-0 lead at halftime, but used a second-half scoring spurt to push past the Knights for good.

“We pulled to within one,” Ripon Christian head coach Keith Terpsma said. “But Gustine answered back and scored three goals before the game was over.

“They left it all on the field against the Redskins, exactly the way we intended to.”

Dylan Van Vliet notched the Knights’ only goal, piercing the back of the net in the match’s 60th minute.

Gustine closed out SL play as the league champion, while the Knights’ seventh-place finish was ahead of Turlock Christian.
