To be the champs, Ripon Christian’s volleyball team must go through the champs.

That’s quite a tall order, both literally.

MCAL champion Redwood of Larkspur (Division II), Sir Francis Drake of San Anselmo (Division III) and Marin Catholic (Division IV) are North Coast Section finalists and are each still alive in higher divisions of the NorCal tournament.

The Bulls are coming off a three-game throttling (25-8, 25-9, 25-12) of Portola, while Ripon Christian staged a thrilling five-game comeback (21-25, 20-25, 25-11, 25-23, 15-6) to knock off visiting Santa Catalina of Monterey in Tuesday’s opening round.

While Schoenberger is surrounded by firepower, she is undoubtedly Branson’s top gun. The Dartmouth-bound senior — also courted by Penn, Georgetown and Harvard — averages 5.6 kills per game. Her 61 aces, 58 blocks and 4.1 digs per game are also team highs.

Schoenberger and 5-8 outside hitter Kathleen Wallace (4.2 k/g, 37 blocks) book end 5-10 Jessie Joseph (44 blocks) and 5-11 Dempsey Wartell (42 blocks), Branson’s standouts in the middle. Freshman Sarah Wallace is another big contributor on the front line.

Junior Meghan Wentzel (634 assists), at 5-9, and 5-8 sophomore Gaby Steiner (311 assists) also provide decent height for setters. Libero Lauren Alper (3.8 digs/game) anchors the back row.
