2000: Oxendine paces Sierra High hoops with 29

10 years ago: December 2, 2000 - There were mixed results for local high school soccer teams at the Beyer Tournament in Modesto on Friday. East Union High topped the field with a 10-0 stomping of Ceres High. Lady Lancers Amber Stone and Amanda Harris led the winning effort with two goals each, Claudia Guzman got an unassisted goal, Courtney Williams, Hopkins, Julia Santos and Jenny Leonard all netted one. EU blasted 35 shots on goal in the match.

Sierra High fell in a close call with Modesto High 2-1 as Marti Teunissen collected the only Lady Timberwolf goal.  Manteca High couldn’t hold on in their match with Lodi High, losing 3-1. Megan Vieira scored for the Lady Buffs.
Manteca High fell to Turlock High 55-46 in the Lincoln Basketball Tournament in Stockton on Friday. Mike Officer led the Buffaloes of Coach Paul Brogan by putting up 17 points, three of which were treys.

The Sierra High basketball team moved on to the championship game in the Riverbank Tournament Friday night when they knocked off Central Valley Christian High 56-50. Cedrick Oxendine led the T’wolf effort with 29 points, 19 rebounds and five steals. Ajay Menorka and Derrick Shaw added 14 points each for the winners.

The East Union High girls basketball team buried Jackson’s Argonaut High 53-13 last night at the Galt Tournament. Lady Lancers coach Rick Inderbitzen played 13 girls and nine of them scored. Amy Haapanen paced EU with 14 points.

The Sierra High Lady T’wolves fell to Patterson High Friday night in the final minute of a heartbreaker basketball game 49-48. Twenty-five turnovers ended up being the difference for Coach Dan Cunial’s girls, as well as sinking only nine of 24 free throws. Trish Werre had 15 points and 14 rebounds to lead Sierra as Lisa Young chipped in 13 more.

The Manteca High Lady Buffs won their second game of the Riverbank Tournament Friday night when they knocked off Riverbank High 46-43.

The first quarter broke East Union High Thursday night, giving up a 68-52 basketball decision to Fairfield’s Armijo High. Coach Eric Simoni’s boys were down 12-0 in the opening quarter. Ron Cook, netting four three-pointers, paced the Lancer scoring with 14 points. Matt Heihn added 13 more in a losing cause.  
Hillary Davis, a Sierra High junior, was named the MVP of the Bulletin’s All-City tennis team. She had a 35-7 record in singles play for the season. Tiffany Vaught and Sara Baxter, from East Union High, were named as the city’s top doubles team.

The three city high school football teams were well represented in selections to the all-Valley Oak League football squad. For Sierra High, defensive end Cedrick Oxendine, running back Josh Montgomery, offensive lineman Chris Wallace and punter Alex Avila were chosen. Manteca High was represented by wide receiver Troy McBroom and East Union High had defensive lineman Brian Geer and defensive end Jason Smith on the first team.

The East Union High wrestling squad took their lumps and learned a valuable lesson Tuesday in a 64-6 loss to a strong Golden Valley High team from Merced. Sergio Lopez (119) and Nick Walden (160) won their matches by decision for the Lancers.
