An improved defensive performance proved to be the key for the Ripon Christian girls basketball team in its second game of the season Thursday night.

After falling to a tough Argonaut team in the opening round of the Escalon Tournament, the Knights powered back with a 53-12 victory over Delta High School of Clarksburg, using their defense to hold Delta from scoring while pouring on points.

“Argonaut was a team that was really quick and really good, and tonight we just did a better job defensively than we did against them Wednesday,” Ripon Christian head coach Ed Mulder said. “Our team chemistry appears to be very good right now. The girls really work hard, and that’s important for a team, especially this early in the year.”

Mikaela Alger led the Knights in scoring with 14 points. Janelle Engel finished with nine, while Katie Thomas rounded out the top scorers with seven points.

Things didn’t go according to plan Thursday for the Ripon Christian varsity boys in the opening round of the Ron Petersen Tip-Off Classic in Riverbank.

After letting the Summerville jump out to a 35-23 lead in the first half, the Knights simply couldn’t contain the offensive attack of the Bears, who opened the lead to 52-33 by the end of the third quarter.

“We had a hard time stopping their leading scorers early on in the game,” Ripon Christian head coach Ron Vander Molen said of Tige Wingo’s eight points in the first quarter and Zach Robertson’s 13 points in the second. “We didn’t really have anything defensively that could stop them.”

Both Danny Vos and Jared Goslinga did manage to put up 11 points apiece, but the offensive production for the Knights fell off greatly after that point.

“Offensively we’re young and we haven’t found our team chemistry yet,” Vander Molen said. “Those are things that we’re going to have to work on if we’re going to improve.”

The Knights will take on the loser of Waterford/Riverbank tonight at 5:30 p.m.
