Squires off to hot start at Ceres Tournament

MODESTO – The East Union sophomore softball team picked back up where it left off a season ago with a 9-0 win over Lathrop Wednesday afternoon at the Ceres Tournament at Rainbow Fields in Modesto.

Kalyn Delao pitched a no-hit shutout in his first start and helped her own cause with a 2-for-4 clip at the plate and a pair of RBIs.

Sharisse Martin was 2 for 4, and Jessica Lavoie went 3 for 4.

Kelsey Emmerson was 3 for 4 with two RBIs, and Blanca Sergura knocked in two more.

“We were dominated by (Delao),” Lathrop head coach Kristina Jones said. “She did a fantastic job.”

The Lancers stranded runners early but starting coming on strong in the middle innings.

“For the first game, we played pretty well,” EU head coach Ronnie Tiscareno said. “We got through it injury free in the rain, which was the goal.”

East Union (1-0) battles Beyer at 8:30 a.m. Saturday with a tilt with Modesto to follow at 10:40.

Lathrop 8, Davis 4 (Wednesday)

Spartan hurler Alicia Erlandson went the distance, allowing four runs on seven hits and striking out five.

Erlandson also went 2 for 4 at the dish, knocking in a pair.

“It was a close game until the top of the seventh,” Jones said. “We scored four runs to break it open.”

Joslyn Terra was 2 for 4 with two doubles and two RBIs.

Lathrop (2-1) heads back to Modesto Saturday.
