MODESTO — Back-to-back errors, combined with mostly silent bats spelled doom for East Union in its first contest Saturday at Rainbow Fields, a 6-0 loss to Grace Davis.

The Lancers picked it up in the nightcap, however, taking a 2-0 win over Beyer to finish the Ceres Tournament 2-1.

Up next is Sacramento’s Tournament of Champions starting Thursday with a contest against Oak Ridge.

Saturday in the loss, Ally Palluck pitched well, but wasn’t backed up by her defense.

“Ally pitched her tail off,” EU head coach Brian Goulart said. “But Davis is an awfully good team, and after a couple of early errors, they broke out.

“We had our chances (at the plate), but our offense is suspect right now; we’ve got to get working on it.”

Kourtni McCall enjoyed the support of her defense in the win — including an unassisted double play by first baseman Cassie Waggy — and turned in her second shutout in as many starts.

Brittany LaMar’s line shot scored Jillian Goulart in the first, and Rochelle Sellers hit home LaMar for a 2-0 lead with a double off the wall two innings later.

LaMar had reached with a triple.
