Thirty years ago, on January 15, 1981, speculation about who would become the new varsity football coach at East Union High School ended when the Manteca Unified School District approved the appointment of Jim C. Brown. The 42 year-old  Brown, a long-time assistant coach under Walker Vick at Manteca High, will succeed Vern Gebhardt, who resigned last November.

Manteca’s varsity five has yet to win a game and as not much has been heard of the Ceres outfit, the locals can possibly start the season by winning their first league assignment.

Four players scored in double figures for the Buffs as Al Betschart had 19, Denny Letcher 13 and Vic Liles and John Nelson canned 12 points each.

Not since the upset of Manteca High in the last VOL game of 1969 had the East Union High Lancers come out on the better end of a conference matchup. The East Union High girls basketball team opened the 1981 VOL season on a sour note Thursday night as the Lady Lancers fell prey to Livingston High 52-38. Amy Powell led the locals with 10 points.

The Manteca High girls rediscovered their offensive punch in Oakdale last night and snapped a four-game losing streak in the process as the Lady Buffaloes blitzed the over-matched Oakdale High girls 65-35 in the VOL opener for both teams. Fleet-footed Donna Foster was the game’s leading scorer with 19 points, while Gigi Cook finished with 17 and Martha Dias had 16.

Make it 16 in a row. But it wasn’t easy by any means for Manteca High, who rode an 18-point performance from Corky Burke to register a scintillating 63-55 victory over cross-town rival East Union High in the deafening din of Dalben Center Friday night. In addition to Burke, Kevin Sample contributed 12 points and Reno Cook and Mike Delmanowski added 11 and 10 apiece. The Lancers were paced by Kelly Stewart’s 18 points and 10 rebounds. Billy Emperador and Larry Lee chipped in 13 apiece.
