Ripon Cyclones baseball tryouts are this Saturday

The Ripon Cyclones travelling baseball program is holding tryouts four seven age-specific teams — 8-under through 14-under — on Saturday, Jan. 22 at Stouffer Park in Ripon.

The 12-14-under teams will have player evaluations 9-11 a.m., while 8-11-under will go from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

LATHROP LITTLE LEAGUE: Lathrop Little League continues early registration for the 2011 season on Thursday, Jan. 20 (5-8 p.m.).

The fees are as follow: $85 for players ages 4-6, $95 for players ages 7-12 and $105 for players ages 13-14. The prices will increase by $15 after the Jan. 20 registration date.

Parents/guardians must provide three proofs of residence and an original birth certificate at the time of registration.

NORTHGATE LITTLE LEAGUE: Northgate Little League is conducting its second tryout session on Jan. 22. Late registrations will also be accepted during the tryouts.

Times for tryouts are as follow: returning major division players from 9-10 a.m., new major candidates (ages 10-12) from 10-11 a.m., minor division candidates (ages 8-10) from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and farm division candidates (ages 6-8) from 1-2:30 p.m. T-ball players (ages 4-6) are not required to try out.

MANTECA BABE RUTH: Signups for the 13-year-old, 14-15-year-old and the new 16-18-year-old divisions will begin Jan. 22 at the Mountain Mike’s Pizza in Manteca from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Additional signup dates are Feb. 12 and 19 at the same site and times. Fee is $150 per player.

MANTECA LITTLE LEAGUE: Late registration is Saturday, Jan. 22. at Straw Hat Pizza from 1-4 p.m. This will be the final day to sign up for the 2011 season.

The late fee is $125. Proof of birth and residence are required for all players at the time of registration.

The league is open to players ages 4-14 who live south of Louise Ave. and east of Main St.  Players from Ripon and Escalon are also welcome.

SOFTBALL

ODYSSEY TRYOUTS: The California Odyssey 18-under competitive fastpitch softball team is looking for dedicated players for the upcoming summer season.

CYCLONES TRYOUTS: The Ripon Lady Cyclones are still in need of players to round out their 12- and 10-under teams for the upcoming 2011 season.

CYCLONES CAMP: The Ripon Lady Cyclones softball program is conducting a two-day camp for girls ages 8-14 on Saturday, Jan. 22 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Sunday, Jan. 23 from 1-4 p.m. at Ripon High.

Girls will get instruction on all facets of the game, including a special session for catchers.

The cost of the camp is $50.

MAYHEM TRYOUTS: The Mayhem Fastpitch 10-under travel team is looking for a solid third baseman/middle infielder.

The team only carries 10 on its roster so that everyone gets maximum playing time. Mayhem will play 16-18 tournaments over the spring and summer with plans on competing at nationals.

BASKETBALL

FREE THROW CONTEST: The annual Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship will take place Jan. 25 (ages 12-14) and 26 (10 and 11) at the St. Anthony’s School gymnasium. The competition tips off at 4 p.m. on both days.

All contestants at the local level are recognized for their participation in the event. Participants are required to complete an entry form to be signed by a parent. This can be done at the gym with a parent present.

Winners at local competitions have the opportunity to progress through the district, chapter and state levels. International champions are announced by the Knights of Columbus International headquarters based on scores from the state events.

Last year, more than 344,000 sharpshooters participated in over 4,700 local competitions.

VOLLEYBALL

RAGE FUNDRAISER: The “All the Rage” wine- and food-tasting event, which benefits the Ripon Rage Volleyball Club, is set for Friday, Jan. 21 at the Ripon Community Center located on 334 W. Fourth Street in Ripon.

The festivities, which start at 6 p.m. and ends at 10, will include a silent auction, raffles and casino night. Tickets are $25.

FIREBALLS TRYOUTS: The under-13 Premier Fireball girls soccer team is holding tryouts Feb. 15 and 17 at Tracy Sports Complex.

WRESTLING

LANCER YOUTH: The Lancer Youth Wrestling Club is accepting signups for the 2010-2011 season during practices on Mondays and Wednesdays.

Practices are held at the East Union wrestling room from 6:30-8 p.m.

BMX

The Spreckels Park BMX track in Manteca holds American Bicycle Association BMX-sanctioned races on Sunday afternoons. Signups to participate are from 2-4 p.m. with races beginning soon after.

Required equipment includes a helmet, long sleeves or elbow pads and long pants. Bicycles will go through a safety check at the track.

You must be an ABA member to race. Memberships can be obtained on race day. An annual membership costs $45, and the fee to enter a race is $10. Admission is free for spectators, and the track is open on non-race days from dawn to dusk, free of charge.
