ELK GROVE — It took some of Manteca’s promising up-and-coming talents to hand young Cosumnes Oaks its first loss of the season, 2-1, Tuesday.

Sophomore forward Airenne Curry found junior Brianna Flynn streaking up the middle for the game-clinching volley with four minutes left in the non-league match.

Rileigh Mankin’s head shot off Renee Munson’s cross broke the scoreless tie 16 minutes into the second half. Just three minutes later, Cosumnes Oaks punched in the equalizer.

It was a 180-degree turnaround from the first half, when the Buffaloes were beat to nearly every 50-50 ball and hardly threatened with attacking runs.

The Buffaloes (5-1-1) were fortunate to be tied at half after the host Wolfpack (3-1) dominated most of the first 40 minutes of play.

“We came out in the second half and looked like whole different team,” Manteca coach Justin Coenenberg said. “We pretty much dominated the second half.”

Coenenberg had freshman goalkeeper Jimmy Collins to thank for keeping his team in it. Collins racked up 15 saves, as Manteca was outshot 19-11.

Manteca next hosts Florin Thursday at 3:30 p.m.

In North Stockton, the Cougars had a tough day, allowing the Bruins to score one in each half.

“They outplayed us today,” Weston Ranch head coach Carlos Gaspar said.

The Cougars travel to McNair this afternoon.
