Manteca native Cady Villarreal turned in her most impressive race of the season, helping lead her Cal State San Marcos Cross Country squad to the 31st Annual Women’s Cross Country National Championships Saturday at the Fort Vancouver National Historic Site.

Villarreal played a prominent role in San Marcos’ second NAIA national championship in as many seasons. Villareal finished the 5K race in 18:18, good for 14th place overall and the leading time for the Cougars. All five of the Cougar runners placed in the top-50 of the championship, giving San Marcos a total of 88 points. Biola came in behind the Cougars for second place with a 127 point finish.

The Cougars were able to come in and defend their national title, while protecting their No. 1 ranking in the NAIA Women’s Cross Country top-25 poll.

Villarreal ended her junior season by capturing All-America honors along with teammates Kelley Thompson (sophomore) and Carol Schryver (junior). All of the Cougars top-5 finished within 30 seconds of Villarreal’s leading time. Black Hills State, Malone and Simon Fraser University rounded out the top-5 teams behind Biola University.
