East Union’s Kyle Harman and Manteca’s Kenny Summers had quite the little battle going Thursday afternoon at Manteca Park Golf Course.

In the end, it was Harman and the Lancers that came out on top, 235-256.

“Kyle hasn’t been shooting his best rounds (to start the season),” EU head coach Dennis Wells said. “But in my opinion, he’s the best golfer in the (Valley Oak League).”

Harman, last season’s Bulletin All-Area MVP, edged out Summers by two strokes, taking home medalist honors with 4-over-par 41.

EU’s Tanner Bragg (47), and Manteca’s Nick Gonzales (52) were also a part of the first group to tee off Thursday.

Guillermo Barajas shot a 48 for East Union (3-1 VOL, 4-2), Jordan Duvall a 49, Ryan Plum a 50, and Joe Fierro had the throw-out, a 65.

For Manteca (2-2 VOL), Jeremy Resuello and Tyler Canady both shot 52, and Casey Benson had a 57.

Dylan Craig’s 65 was the throw-out score.

“We have a lot of young guys,” Wells said. “We lost four starters from last year’s team, and it’s showing right now.”

Last season, Bragg was the Lancers’ youngster, while Harman and John Ott led the way.

With Ott returning to the baseball diamond this year, Harman will be counted on to carry the load.

“I expect a lot out of Kyle, and he knows that,” Wells said.

East Union travels to Oakdale Tuesday, while the Buffaloes meet Sierra at Manteca Park.
