1981: East Union advances in basketball playoffs

40 years ago: March 3, 1971 - East Union High’s bid for a successful finish of their 1970-71 basketball season was soundly stilled by the fast-breaking talents of St. Mary’s High in an 86-76 defeat last Friday night. The frustrating setback sets Coach Carl Bosque’s Lancers two games ahead of cellar-dwelling Los Banos High with a 3-13 record in VOL play.

: March 6, 1981 - East Union High utilized a big second half Tuesday night and romped past South Tahoe High Vikings 55-42 in the first round of the Sac-Joaquin Section Class “AA” playoffs. The Lancers improved their overall mark to a school record 20-9 with the win. Billy Emperador finished as the leading scorer for the Lancers with 16 points, followed by Kelly Stewart, who had 11 points and 11 rebounds. Besides netting some big free throws in the final minutes, Scott Brooks, only a sophomore, single-handedly beat South Tahoe’s press with his dribbling skill.

At Shingle Springs, Ponderosa High ran to a 70-57 victory over the Manteca High girls in the first round of the Section “AA” playoffs Tuesday night. An ailing Martha Dias, suffering from a 101-degree temperature, had 19 points for the Lady Buffs, while Gigi Cook paced the girls with 22 points and Donna Foster added 14 more.

Linden High scored three runs in the fifth inning and squeezed by East Union High 3-2 in prep baseball action Tuesday. The game was called after six innings due to darkness. An RBI single by pitcher Adrian Racacho gave EU an early 1-0 lead and the Lancers added another run in the fourth after two outs.

The host Tracy High tennis team won all the singles matches and went on to defeat  Manteca High 3-2 in the opener for both schools Thursday. The doubles teams of Tim Won-Randy Lagomarsino and Ron Bylow-Clay Burkett were Buffalo winners.

The Manteca High golf team made it two wins in a row as they crushed Turlock High 206-228 Thursday at the Turlock Country Club. Bill Corder shot a 38 to lead his team.

Dennis Essenwein continued his excellent golf, gaining medalist honors with a 38, but East Union High couldn’t overcome the balance of St. Mary’s High, bowing 209-237 at windy Elkhorn Country Club in Stockton on Thursday.

Nevada Union High of Grass Valley, utilizing a crisp, well-timed offense which resulted in a sizzling 63 percent field goal mark, ended Manteca High’s Cinderella season with a 58-50 victory Friday night in the semi-finals of the Section”AA” basketball tournament at Lodi’s Tokay High. The Buffaloes finished the season with a 26-4 mark and also had their 20-game winning streak snapped. Reno Cook had 17 points and Jody Ruble 14 for the local five.

Led by a stellar pitching performance by Brian Keeney and an explosive offense, the Manteca High baseball team scored six runs in the sixth inning to cruise to a 6-0 win over Galt High in a non-league contest Friday afternoon. Gerald Capps and Tony Souza had doubles for the Buffaloes. Keeney pitched six innings, allowed just two hits, struck out two and didn’t walk a batter.
