1991: EU High baseball rolls over Edison, 11-0

20 years ago: March 9, 1991 - East Union High baseball coach Darrell Hardcastle used all 19 of his players en route to an 11-1 romp over visiting Edison High yesterday. The bench supplied six of the Lancers’ 10 hits and scored five runs. Mike Costa pitched the first six innings, allowing just one run on seven hits to earn the win. Eric Simoni, Clint Colwell and Brian Bettencourt each had a pair of hits for EU. Simoni scored three times.

MaryAnn Wallace, a standout volleyball player at Manteca High and San Joaquin Delta College, will play for the University of California, Davis next fall. She made her commitment to the non-scholarship Division II school this past week after considering several other offers.

Despite the challenge of Beyer High and Calaveras High and unseasonably cold temperatures, both the boys and girls track teams of Manteca High scored wins in San Andreas Monday afternoon. Leading the way for the Buffaloes in the 81-72 boys victory over Beyer High was senior Rick Asbell who took three firsts and a second in his four events. He easily crushed the competition in the shot put (53-8) and discus (137-3) and ran a leg on the winning 400-meter relay team (46.18), The Lady Buffs pulled off a five-second win in the 1600 meter relay to finish with a 65-62 advantage over the Beyer High girls. Jenna Asprey and Lynn Spradlin each grabbed three wins for MHS. Asprey took firsts in the 100 meter hurdles (17.9) and the 300 meter hurdles (54.55) and ran a leg of the winning 400 meter relay team (52.59). Spradlin took wins in the 400 meters (1:04.21) and the 200 meters (27.43, as well as the winning relay leg.

The Manteca High tennis team, now 5-1 on the season, claimed their most impressive win of the season on Monday afternoon, thrashing Tokay High in Lodi 14-1. Turning in the strongest effort was Buffalo No.1 singles player Mark Hinojosa, who whitewashed all three of his opponents by 6-0 scores.

Hoping to show the VOL the shape of things to come, the East Union High swim team proved to be ungracious hosts as they swept Modesto High in both boys and girls competition Tuesday afternoon. While the girls ran away with a 79-53 victory, the boys held off the Panthers 80-71. Eric Wohle led the way for the boys with two individual first place finishes (200 meter freestyle in 1:55 and 100 meter butterfly in 58.78) and legs on two winning Lancer relay teams. Nina Danielsen spurred the Lady Lancers with two individual wins (200 meter IM in 3:08 and the 100 meter free in 59.56), while aiding two victorious relay teams.

The East Union High softball team evened its pre-season record at 1-1 with a rain-shortened 6-2 victory over Franklin High of Stockton Tuesday afternoon. The contest was called after four innings. Regina Miller drove in two runs with a triple and a single for coach Mike Morenzone’s EU squad.

Behind the pitching of surprise starter Jared Murillo and an eight-hit onslaught that  included two triples and two doubles, the Manteca High baseball team downed Livingston High 4-1 Wednesday afternoon on the Buffs’ diamond. The Buffaloes evened their pre-season record at 3-3 as Murillo didn’t allow an earned run in hurling a complete game. He helped his own cause with a run-scoring third-inning triple.

Most Valuable Player awards presented Wednesday night at the East Union High Winter Sports Social came as no surprise for the boys and girls basketball teams. Armando Avina and Angie Paradzinski were both honored as their respective team’s MVP’s. Kirsten Nelson was named MVP for girls soccer and Ken Hilberg was honored as the outstanding Lancer wrestler.

When the smoke cleared Thursday afternoon, the Manteca High softball team was a 4-0 loser to Downey High in the opening round of the Turlock tournament. The Lady Buffs, now 1-2-1, could muster only one hit, a second-inning single by Sue Nunes.



10 years ago: March 17, 2001 - At the Lincoln Softball Tournament in Stockton yesterday, East Union High lost to Elk Grove’s Laguna Creek High 6-5 in a game that could have gone either way. A pair of errors in the fourth inning resulted in a four-run splurge that put the game away for Laguna. Amanda Vickers had three hits and batted in a pair of runs, while Cassie Medeiros doubled twice and drove in three runs for the Lady Lancers.

Lisa Young’s home run proved to be the difference as Sierra High edged Napa High 1-0 at the Lincoln Softball Tournament yesterday in Stockton. Amanda Tucker pitched a no-hitter and struck out 10 batters to pick up the win for the Lady Timberwolves.

The East Union High tennis team demolished Sonora High 12.5-2.5 on Friday in Sonora. Singles players Nathan Oates and Joe Joaquin each won three games. In doubles action, Aaron Carter and Joel Cachero took both of their decisions.

The Manteca High tennis team suffered a loss to Oakdale High Friday by a score of 11-4. Mike Peters won two games in singles play for the Buffaloes.

Giving up a two-run lead in the sixth inning and with a couple of errors in the final inning, Losing pitcher Justin Beckman drove in two runs with a base hit for the Buffs.

A home run and some Sierra High throwing errors opened the door for a seven-run inning to propel Bear Creek High to a 9-5 baseball win over the T’wolves on Friday. Matt Berezay drove in four of the five T’wolf runs with three hits, including two doubles.

Both the East Union High boys and girls swim teams were defeated by identical 101-69 scores Friday at Tracy High. Victor Hucke paced the Lancers with wins in the 200 Free and 100 Fly.  Allison Wright took firsts in the 100 Free and 100 Breast races for the Lady Lancers.

The Sierra High tennis team defeated Los Banos High 10-5 on Friday. Tony Lam was  a three-time winner for the T’wolf singles players. Steve Gallagher-Ryan Allen led the SHS doubles teams as they swept the Tigers.

Becci Harnden pitched a one-hitter, a single in the sixth inning, as Manteca High blanked Riverbank High 4-0 on Thursday. Lydia McKenzie led the way for the Lady Buffs with three hits on the day.

Manteca High swam to 94-56 win over the Franklin High boys and the Lady Buffs won every event except one on Thursday. Brandon Barrett had a full day of wins for MHS, taking two firsts and helping win three relay races. Evan Gainer also had two individual wins and swam parts of two winning relay teams. Sarah Houck had two wins for the Lady Buffs.

East Union High’s track teams hosted West High’s teams on Thursday with mixed results. The Lancer boys downed the Wolfpack runners by an 80-36 score, while the Lady Lancers dropped a 58-28 decision to West. Kenny Hughes had a strong day for EU with wins in the 100 (10.9) and in the 200 (24.2). He also ran a leg on the winning 4x100 relay team. For the EU girls, Amy Haapanen led with two firsts. She tossed the discus 109-6 and the shot put at 39-7.

It was a split win for Manteca High’s track teams on Thursday as the boys defeated Los Banos High 73-62, but the Lady Buffs lost by a 74-64 score. For the girls, Aimee Sims took first in the pole vault with a nine-foot effort and followed up with a first in the high hurdles at 18.01. Amanda Toon was also a MHS double winner with firsts in the mile (6:09) and in the two-mile (13:12). In boys action, Willie Toon ran a fast two-mile in 10:12 for a first place.

A strong Sierra High track team hit the road to Sonora High on Thursday and came back winners as the T’wolf girls beat the Lady Wildcats 83-55 but the boys team was edged out in the final two events to lose 82-54. Lorelyn Pascual won the 100 meters (12.6) and the 200 meters (26.21) and ran on two winning relay teams for Sierra. For the boys, Matt Truscott won three events to help his team. He took firsts in the 110 hurdles (15.33), the 300 hurdles (42.66) and tied for first in the high jump at 5-8.

Chris Adams drove in three runs with two hits, including a home run, to pace East Union High to an 11-10 win over Lodi High in baseball action on Wednesday. Chris Dietrich collected four hits and drove in another pair of runs for the Lancers.
