1979: Buffs use 16 walks in win

Eighty years ago, on March 14, 1929, reports coming in from spring training quarters of the Seattle Indians in southern California indicated that Emil Theiler, former star player for the Manteca Maulers of the Don Pedro League, was doing fine work in practice games being held. He continued to play third base and bat in the leadoff position for Seattle. In the previous Friday’s game against Oakland, he handled four chances but failed to dent the hit column.

90 years ago: March 14, 1919 - Manager Jack Helper placed this notice in the Bulletin: Every man or boy who wants to get into the ball team is requested to show up on the school grounds next Sunday afternoon, providing the weather is right and help organize a ball team. All will be given a tryout.

70 years ago: March 16, 1939 -
Last Tuesday afternoon, Manteca High’s baseball team met and defeated a local group of all-stars 11 to 8, behind the pitching of Frank Lourentzos, Bill Blodgett and Lou Bronzan. The Buffaloes looked particularly strong at the plate as they secured numerous extra-base hits. However, their fielding was poor and they made several costly errors.

50 years ago: March 12, 1959 - Last Thursday afternoon, unbeatable Modesto High was upset by the Manteca High baseball team 4 to 2. The Buffaloes scored four times in the bottom of the sixth inning, with John Holbrook’s two-run double being the big hit. Jerry Guibor pitched five no-hit innings for the Buffaloes.
Last Thursday, Manteca High traveled to Stockton and lost a track meet at Edison High 73-28. Dungy, Leavens, Sommerfield and Yamasaki took firsts for Manteca.

40 years ago: March 19, 1969 - The Manteca soccer team scored another victory Sunday afternoon as they downed La Bamba of Sacramento 6-2 on the Manteca High soccer field. Scoring goals were Arturo Ochoa and Bernard Arroyo. Cited for playing an outstanding offensive game were Dick Rocklewitz and Joe Head.
The Lancer track team of East Union High came home with a victory Thursday as they posted an 85-35 win against St. Mary’s High. EU sprinter Manuel Luis made his successful change from basketball to track as he took firsts in the 100, high jump and long jump.
A costly error late in the sixth inning of play was the difference in a close pre-season baseball game as East Union High was shut out by Sonora High 1-0 last Friday afternoon.
Manteca High’s tennis team won its second match in a row by a shutout when they whitewashed the St. Mary’s High net men Friday afternoon. The undefeated Buffalo netters were led by Lindsay Munoz, John Bell and Karl Renwanz in the singles, while duos of Don Zimmerman-Kent Kruger and Pat Siefner-Bill Lancaster topped the doubles matches.
The Manteca High baseball nine suffered their fourth straight loss Friday afternoon when 1968 Valley Oak League champion St. Mary’s High downed the Buffaloes 7-2. Dennis Candini and Steve Beaver scored the runs for Manteca.
Manteca High’s swimmers downed the Livingston High team last week. Under the guidance of Coach Phil Strick, the Buffalo mermen put on a strong effort by winning all but one first place.
The East Union High golf team won their second match of the season last Friday afternoon, defeating their non-league opponent at Franklin High by a score of 225-270. Lancer Ron Agostini took medalist honors with a four-over-par 40.

30 years ago: March 11, 1979 - The Manteca High track team took a 73-62 win from St. Mary’s High during action in Stockton on Friday. The Buffalo girls’ team scored an easy and crushing 93-16 victory. Sergio Aguilar was the boys’ only double winner, taking the mile and two-mile runs. In women’s action, Andrea and Denise Negley and Pam Filippini were also double winners. Denise took first in the mile and two-mile, Andrea topped the 440 and 880 and Filippini earned firsts in the shot put and the discus.
Lincln High of Stockton swept the East Union High badminton team 5-0 during a match at Lincoln on Friday.
Manteca High’s golf team downed Livermore High for the second time in pre-season action, recording a 205 on the Las Positas course last Thursday to Livermore’s 217. Jim Williams had the low round for the Buffaloes with a 38.
Jumper Herbie Joseph earned three first places for East Union High, but his efforts weren’t enough as Lincoln High grabbed a 71-54 victory during preseason track action on Monday. Joseph earned firsts in the triple jump (42-0), long jump (19-8) and high jump (6-1), as well as pacing relay teams to victories. In women’s action, Lincoln High took a 61-47 win. The Lancers had three double winners: Amy Powell, Jennifer Padron and Julie Johnson. Powell topped the high jump (4-10) and long jump(14-11.5), Padron won the shot put (28-11) and set a new school record in the discus (110-6), while Johnson earned wins in the mile (5:51) and two-mile (13:14).
Pounding a sound 17-10 victory over Livermore High on Monday, the East Union High softball sluggers boast a 4-1 season mark. Barb Van Mater was four for six for the Lancers, pounding a two-run double and scoring twice.
The Manteca High winter sports social held Wednesday was a happy occasion for those in attendance because the Buffalo athletes had lots of success to talk about. Gymnastics, wrestling and men’s and women’s basketball all sent athletes to the Sac-Joaquin Sections.
Based on a final ruling on score book discrepancies, Manteca High softballers fell to Franklin High 10-9 in eight innings on Wednesday. Karen Steves and Linda Morenzone knocked in run-scoring doubles for the Buffaloes.
With great fielding and a solid hitting attack, East Union High whipped Edison High 8-4 in baseball action in Stockton last Tuesday. Mike Lawton and Mark George each had a pair of runs batted in for the Lancers.
Escalon High was trounced 4-0 by the East Union High tennis team on Tuesday. Lancer wins were by singles players Preston Tanaka and Sam Millard, while the doubles teams of Larry Reeves-Bob Vieira and Steve Masuda-Danny Nunes were winners.
The Manteca High tennis team blasted Livingston High 5-0 on Tuesday. Buffalo winners were Jeff Brock, Jon Shaefer and Jody Ruble in singles, while John Anderson-Grant Brashears and Alan Francella-Greg Toy won in doubles.
The East Union High golf team toppled Piedmont High 198-208 during Tuesday rounds at the Carlmont Country Club, paced by the two-under-par 34 of David Perry.
 
20 years ago: March 14, 1989 -
The Manteca High softball team used an 18-hit attack on the way to a 10-2 win over host Franklin High yesterday, the Lady Buffs’ first win of the season. Tisha Herzfeld pitched the distance for MHS, striking out seven and giving up just two hits. Randi Sousa was Manteca’s top hitter with two doubles and a single.
Winter sports awards winners for basketball, wrestling and soccer were announced after the annual social at East Union High Monday night. Most Valuable Players were: Robert Randall and Michelle Taylor (basketball), Jed Phelps (soccer) and Angelo Gama (wrestling).
The pitching of Modesto’s Grace Davis High held East Union High to only three runs on four hits and the Lady Spartans went on to win 9-3 in softball action at Northgate Park Tuesday afternoon. Letisha Enriquez slapped a double for the Lady Lancers.
East Union High and Modesto-Grace Davis High were involved in a one-run baseball game Wednesday until the Spartans blew it open with six runs on two hits, two walks and five Lancer errors in the top of the sixth inning at the EU diamond. Davis went on to win the 11-5 game. Scott Wattenbarger collected two hits in a losing cause.
East Union High’s golf team defeated Manteca High 230-252 on the back nine of the Manteca Park Golf Course Thursday afternoon in the first VOL contest for both schools. Windy conditions made playing difficult, but the Lancers were able to extend their season record to 8-0. The Buffs fall to 0-4. Jason Snyder and Jason Adams led the way for EU with rounds of 44. Rick Mullen had the Buffs’ best performance with a 44.
