The 100 block of Maple Avenue - the latest focus in the perennial tiffs over downtown streets - will continue to have one-way traffic heading south.

The Manteca City Council this week on a 4-1 vote with Vince Hernandez dissenting opted to keep things as they are after a series of workshops and staff evaluation of proposals to flip the direction of travel or revert back to two-way travel were studied.

Attention could very well shift back to the bulbs in the 100 block of North Main Street next as Councilwoman Debbie Moorhead noted that she still believes “one of those bulbs have to go.” It was in reference to a landscaping bulb-out that repeatedly has had drivers run up over its curb and damage landscaping.

The landscaping bulbs as well as the one-way traffic on Maple triggered opposition from the first day they were put in place in 2005.

Hernandez believes the direction should be flipped. At the same time, though, he noted it was important that the city listened to the concerns of business owners, property owners, and community members and re-examined options

Councilman Steve DeBrum also noted the exercise had value pointing out efforts are now going to be made to improve signage at Yosemite Avenue to discourage illegal left turns off Maple as well as to re-open dialogue with the Postal Service on ways to relieve congestion around that Post Office.

When Maple Avenue’s one-way configuration first went in, the city was hopeful the post office would agree to relocate mail boxes to a revamped parking lot across the street. They even had it designed so mail could be dropped off from the driver’s side and eliminate the need for the alley mail boxes.
