MODESTO — Sophomore Josh Richter made his grand entrance into the 2009 season Tuesday at the par-36 Modesto Municipal Golf Course.

Richter shot 1 over par to lead Ripon’s best round so far in a 206-215 win against host Modesto Christian.

The round’s medalist wasn’t alone in delivering a low score.

Daniel Cardoza finished with a 3-over 39, freshmen Nick Mendonsa and Jake Ratto turned in a 42 and 43, respectively, and Mark Bigelow carded a 46.

“It’s a huge difference having (Richter) back,” Ripon coach Chris Musseman said. “If he wasn’t there, we would have taken a 50-plus score and lost.

“But I’m also proud of the rest of the guys. To have four guys playing under-bogey golf, we just had a day.”

Richter’s return came just in time. If Ripon (2-0, 5-1 overall) is to return to the top of the Trans Valley League standings by season’s end, it will have to get past an improved team such as Modesto Christian’s.

“I thought Escalon was the team to beat, but Modesto Christian is tough, too,” Musseman said. “And they were missing one of their guys today.”

Ripon locks up with rival Ripon Chrsitian Thursday at Spring Creek Country Club.
