WESTON RANCH — Fresh off its championship effort in the Big Valley Christian Tournament in Modesto Saturday, Weston Ranch knew it was in for a step-up in competition to open Valley Oak League action Tuesday.

Though East Union dominated all 80 minutes of the match en route to a 5-0 victory, coach Jim Todd came away impressed by the opposition.

“Weston Ranch is a clearly improved program,” he said.

The Lancers (1-0, 5-4-3 overall) held a one-sided 29-3 shot advantage.

Megan Howley struck at the 20-minute mark off of the first of two Adrianna Villasenor assists. Odemaris Castillo registered the first of her two goals just two minutes later, scoring again off Selena daSilva’s cornerkick with four minutes to go.

Rachel Bonds and Howley combined for an assist to Kyrie Belme in the 31st minute, and Gianna Hedin ended the contest with a penalty kick to cap the final score.

Wegner and Hedin combined efforts and goalie and were aided by defenders Reanna Schmitt, Jesika Villegas, Julie Lennert, Brittany Bertao and Bonds in the shutout.

East Union heads to Oakdale Thursday for a 4 p.m. match, while Weston Ranch (4-6-1) hosts Central Valley of Ceres.
