Tammy Dunbar, who teaches a 4th/5th grade combination class at Lincoln School received the 2009 California Subject Matter Projects Teacher Leadership Award from the California International Studies Program.

The award recognizes outstanding leadership in teacher education and school improvement efforts in International Studies. The California Subject Matter Project is a state-wide network of educators providing professional development for elementary and secondary teachers. Dunbar was one of the two Technology Leadership Award recipients selected from a five-county region that includes San Joaquin, Stanislaus, and Calaveras counties

Registration for year-round and traditional schools takes place at the school of attendance starting on April 15 from 9 a.m.to 3:30 P.M.

In order to register for kindergarten, you must provide the following:

•proof of birth as evidence of age (must be 5 years of age on or before December 2 of the current year);

•written evidence of a physical examination on or after February 9, 2009

•written evidence of an Oral Health (Dental) Assessment on or after: August 10, 2008

•proof of residency (i.e. PG&E, telephone, or water bill);

•written evidence of up-to-date immunizations with month and

•year of each vaccine dose signed or stamped by clinic, physician, or nurse.

Students and teachers in Manteca High School’s Visual and Performing Arts Department will celebrate their annual Day of the Arts on Wednesday, April 1, from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Winter Gym.

On display will be artwork from the school’s art, design, photo, architecture, and video production classes. A panel of experts will judge the student artwork, with top-prize finishers moving on to compete in the District Art Show later in the month. Awards will also be given to outstanding students in each of the department’s classes. Weston Ranch High’s Art Department will be hosting its annual Spotlight on the Arts show.

The show will be on April 1-2  in the WRHS Auditorium.

Doors will open at 6:45 p.m. and performances from WRHS band, guitar, and choir will begin at 7 p.m. Admission is free but there is always nice pottery made by WRHS ceramics students and there is also a drawing held by the Art Department every year, as well as a snack bar so make sure to bring some money and come and support the Art Department.

Weston Ranch High Drama presents While the Lights Were Out a play horror/comedy originally by Jack Sharkey. Doors will be opening at 6:30 p.m. on March 20, 21, 27 and 29.

Tickets will be only $5 for students with student IDs and $8 for general admission.

Weston Ranch FFA will be having a chicken BBQ drive in dinner on April  from 4 to 6 p.m.. The dinner will be $8 per person or $24 for four people.

The dinner will include 1/2 chicken, a roll, a serving of salad, and a serving of beans per person. All proceeds will benefit the Agriculture Department and help raise funds for state conference

The Mayor’s Committee on the Arts recently sponsored a Gang Prevention Poster Contest. Winning posters completed by MUSD students are now up and available for viewing in the DeGroot’s Shopping Center and Guido’s Pizza Place. There are ballots at Guido’s where kids can vote on the poster they like the best.

This Spring, students at Sierra High will be performing the Broadway hit “Seussical: The Musical” for adults, teens, and children. “Seussical” joins classic Dr. Seuss characters such as the Cat in the Hat, Horton the Elephant, and the Whos of Whoville in a magical story which is fun for all ages.

This production is unique in that it will feature the talents of both the Advanced Theatre class as well as the Advanced Choir class.

“Suessical” will premiere at the Sierra High Performing Arts Building on April 16 and run until April 25. A special sneak preview will be offered on April 15 as part of Sierra High’s yearly “Evening of the Arts” showcase.

A Spaghetti dinner fundraiser for the Jeff Gonsalez Memorial Scholarship is Wednesday, April 1, from 5 to 7:30 p.m. at the Manteca High cafeteria.

The Manteca High School Sober Grad Committee is having their annual Fagundes Drive Thru Dinner on March 26, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.

The box dinners will include tri-tip, chicken breast, potato salad and roll. The cost for the meal is $12 per box and can be picked up at the front parking lot of the high school. Please call Pam Ryan at 824-2206 for tickets or additional information.

The Visual and Performing Arts Academy at East Union High School announces its newest production featuring Woody Allen’s absurdly hilarious one acts “Death Knocks” and “god.” The production runs March 27 and 28, at 7 p.m. in the black box theatre.

Join us for an evening of mad-cap comedy, peppered with metaphysical and philosophical questions. There’s nothing quite like a night of Woody Allen!

Tickets are only $7 at the door of the Playbox Theatre at East Union. The box office opens at 6:15 and the doors open at 6:30 p.m.
