Sixteen-year-old Mantecan Will Brink posted his best round of the summer when he won the Oakdale Rotary Junior Classic at Oakdale Golf and Country Club Monday.

The Bulletin’s 2011 Male Golfer of the Year carded a 1-under-par 71, edging out Riverbank native Kyle Intorf by a stroke for the tournament’s overall title. He also beat Kevin Murray of Newark and Raymon Tira of Stockton to win the boys 16-17 division.

Brink, a junior at East Union High this upcoming school year, birdied the par-4 seventh and par-3 12th holes. His only blemish was a bogey on the par-3 16th.

Brink is currently ranked 37th out of 388 boys in the 16-17 performance points standings of the Junior Golf Association of Northern California. He has logged four JGANC tournament appearances with three top-10 finishes in his age group, including an eighth-place finish in the 32nd Annual Tokay Junior at Woodbridge Golf and Country Club and a ninth-place finish in the Bill Dougherty Memorial at Yolo Fliers Club.

Some of his East Union teammates also competed in Oakdale. Jordan Duval placed 15th with a 77, Evan Lewis finished 39th with an 87 and Eric Lewis ended up 54th with a 95.

Brink bested several familiar foes from the Valley Oak League in the overall 67-man field that includes 14-15-year-olds. Among his VOL rivals were Sonora High’s Michael Sturgis, Oakdale’s Isaac Rellamas, Oakdale’s Ian Stogdell, Oakdale’s Ryan Jones and Kimball’s Phillip Simpson.

The reigning VOL MVP, Drew Allen of Sierra, was part of a five-way tie for 15th with a 77.

In the girls competition, Ripon High grad Samantha Conway took fourth with a score of 84, and East Union’s Jenny Ketner finished 13th with a 105.

Allen, Conway and Ketner also competed in the two-day George Maroney Junior at Creekside Golf Club and Dryden Park Golf Course Tuesday and Wednesday in Modesto.

Allen finished 10th overall and scored two 77s for a two-round score of 154. Conway was seventh overall (88-88—170, and Ketner placed 14th (94-96—190). Haylee Fannin, also of Ripon High, was 11th (91-95—186).
