The Lady Cyclones 12-under softball team of Ripon put together an impressive two-day tournament run, winning the Independent Fastpitch Association Western World Series championship in Stockton over the past weekend.

The Lady Cyclones went 7-1 in the tournament, closing out the championship run with a 7-5 victory over the Roseville Rampage. The Lady Cyclones were part of an 11-team bracket “A” group that included teams from Tracy, Stockton and Roseville.

The Lady Cyclones were able to start the tournament off in style, outscoring their opponents 23-6 over the first three games. The Cyclones knocked off the Rampage for the first time with a 6-5 victory, but would fall to the same squad after a return from the loser’s bracket 10-3.

With the tournament title at stake, the Lady Cyclones responded and put together their second victory over the Rampage, securing the IFA West Coast World Series title.

“That was our seventh game and I knew that we were tired,” Cyclones head coach Johnny Aguilar said. “We had lost our No. 1 pitcher and we knew that it was going to be tough.

“I knew right then and there that we were going to have a tough day.”

The group responded, putting together their best performance when the most was at stake. After enough softball in two days to last a half of a slow-pitch season, the team used a huge runs scoring triple from Kendelle Messersmith to bring home the title.

“I had a meeting with our girls before the final game and I told them that we’ve worked hard all season,” Aguilar said. “We knew we were tired; we had already played seven games in two days, so I just asked the girls for seven more innings.

“I asked them for one more game; to pull out something big and they responded.”
