CERES — East Union No. 1Tyler Ward won 6-0 and 6-2, and fell 6-4 to Ceres’ No. 1 Thursday in a 10-5-4.5 loss to the Bulldogs.

Ward’s impressive performance was complemented well by No. 2 Sean Hilscher, who picked up a 6-3 win and fell 7-6 (7-3) in a tiebreaker.

Steve Shepherd dropped three to round out singles play.

“It was very windy in Ceres, and that suited Tyler’s game,” EU head coach Ron Bylow said. “He’s not an overpowering hitter, he uses a lot of spin and it worked out well.

“He was competitive the whole match; he did a great job.”

In doubles play, No. 2 Matt Eichstadt and Chris Garcia won 11-10 (7-5) and fell 10-1.

Ariel Rossette and Marcos Aleman fell 10-1, 10-3.

EU picked up its first league points of the season, a sign that the Lancers are on the upswing.

East Union hosts Sierra Tuesday.

Sonora  13.5, Sierra 2.5

Kevin Rausa has been playing well this season, but on Thursday Sierra’s No. 1 kicked it up a notch, knocking off Sonora’s Eric Segerstrom, 6-4.

Gabe Hernandez and John-Allan Hewitt downed the Wildcats’ No. 2 doubles combo, 10-6.

“Hats off to Kevin, he played strong,” Sierra head coach Arabella Whitlock said. “But we could’ve had a few more wins. We lacked focus.”
