Positive Coaching Alliance holding workshop for parents at MHS

Manteca High is hosting a workshop by the Positive Coaching Alliance next Wednesday, Aug. 24. The interactive workshop, which will run 90-120 minutes, is free and starts at 7 p.m. at the school’s theater.
The goal is to teach parents ways they can help their children enjoy sports in a positive fashion and use them to develop physically, socially and mentally.
Other topics to be covered include: Guidelines for developing a positive coach-parent relationship; understanding the research-based three stages of talent development; and engaging children in constructive, meaningful conversations.

SHS PARENT MEETING: Sierra High is holding its fall sports parent meeting Monday, Aug. 22 at 7 p.m. in the large gym.

MHS ALUMNI GAME: The Manteca High boys soccer team is holding its annual Band of Buffaloes Alumni Game Tuesday, Aug. 23 at 6:30 p.m. The alumni game will be preceded by an intrasquad scrimmage involving the school’s varsity players.
Cost to participate in the alumni game is $5. A full snack bar will be available. All proceeds will benefit the school’s soccer programs.

OKTOBERFEST FUN RUN: The Oktoberfest Fun Run, which benefits Building Together Today and West High’s varsity boys basketball team, will take place Saturday, Sept. 24 in Tracy. The race will start (8 a.m.) and end at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church on 1635 Chester Drive.
The event is part of the Oktoberfest celebration. A pancake breakfast is included for all runners at 9, and non-runners may join in for a small donation. An awards ceremony will take place at 9:15.
The pre-registration cost to participate is $20, which includes a t-shirt and goody bag, before Sept. 15. The fee goes up to $30 on the day of the race, and t-shirts will be available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Registration forms are available at

TOURNEY: The Manteca Business Alliance is holding its first golf tournament Sept. 30 at Manteca Park Golf Course. Registration is at 6 a.m., and the tournament will begin with a shotgun start at 7.
A $100 entry fee includes green fees, cart rental, lunch, tournament t-shirt, tee prizes and on-course beverages. Former major leaguer Vida Blue will make a special guest appearance.

NORCAL: The NorCal Valley Baseball Academy is holding tryouts for the fall season today at Ripon Christian High School.
Tryout times are as follow: 9-12-under from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.; 13-14-under from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.; 15-18-under from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

CYCLONES: The Ripon Lady Cyclones’ 12-under “black” team is still looking for players to round out its fall roster. The team is in need of a catcher and strong infielders.

TITANS: The Tracy Titans 10- and 12-under fastpitch teams are holding tryouts today at Clyde Bland Park in Tracy.
The 10-under team will be conducting tryouts from noon to 3 p.m. The 12-under team will try out pitchers and catchers from 9 a.m. to noon, and 10 to noon for all positions.


RED DEVILS: The Red Devils girls team of the Manteca Futbol Club are looking for competitive soccer players for the NorCal Premier fall and spring leagues as well as the State Cup.
Potential players must be born on Aug. 1, 1998 or after.

CYBL: The California Youth Basketball League is accepting registrations for the Fall 2011 season. Games begin Aug. 27 and run through Nov. 5.
