Wade Morten’s sent a shot soaring over the left-field fence, but it was ruled foul.

He left little doubt on the next delivery.

Morten’s home run in the sixth inning capped the final score of host East Union’s 4-2 win against Central Valley Tuesday.

It was a much-needed victory for the Lancers (2-3 Valley Oak League, 6-5 overall), who had dropped their first four of five regular-season contests.

And it’s always tough facing Central Valley (2-3, 5-8) with Martin Gomez on the hill. The all-around standout struck out five and yielded two earned runs on five hits. He helped his own cause with a two-run homer in the fourth.

“(Gomez) is solid, so for us this was huge,” East Union coach Dan Triglia said. “We don’t need to be thinking about splitting this week; we need both for us to get back in the race.”

East Union pitcher Steven Weddington hung tough after giving up a leadoff double to Izzy Trevino and the ensuing jack to Gomez in the fourth.

His three-hit gem featured six strikeouts — three of which came in order in the seventh.

“Steven got stronger as the day went on, and he showed a lot coming back from the home run,” Triglia said. “He was helped by some outstanding defense today, so it was just a very solid all-around team win.”

The defense played error-free ball, and Marshall Swift recorded 10 assists from shortstop.

Sonora 9, Manteca 6

At Manteca High, an error led to four Sonora runs in the sixth and proved to be the difference in the game. The host Buffaloes (2-3, 8-8-1) were up 6-5 after five.

Ryan Knisely (three runs) and Sam Jorgensen (two runs, two RBIs) were each 3 for 4, and Matt Burrows finished 2 for 4 with two RBIs.
Oakdale 10, Weston Ranch 0

In Oakdale, Tyler Scharnow lasted 3 2/3 allowing eight earned and striking out three. Michael Piccirrilli had Weston Ranch’s lone base hit.

“We had no errors; we played decent ball,” Cougars head coach Dave Smith said. “Oakdale is just very talented.”
