Manteca High opened its season Friday with a lopsided 55-7 non-league win at Galt.

The Buffaloes  took away the home-field advantage by scoring often enough in the first half, relying on a balanced attack while getting touchdowns from five different players.

Leading the way for Manteca High (1-0) was senior quarterback Alex Martinez, who completed 11 of his 14 passes for 246 yards and two TDs.

First, he hooked up with Danny Gouveia on a first-quarter 30-yard scoring toss, and in the second half found Eric Ceja on a 42-yard TD strike.

“Alex looked good,” said Buffalo coach Eric Reis, who also employed multiple running backs.

The Warriors (0-2) mustered up 60 yards rushing and 163 yards passing.

Manteca, in contrast, tallied 503 total yards including 257 of that on the ground.

According to Reis, his Buffaloes did experience some typical early-season problems.

“We started slow, but cleaned it up and finished strong,” he said.

Reis added, “Special team play was not so crisp.”

Still, the positive far outweighed the negatives for the Buffaloes, who opened up the scoring on Cameron Harvey’s 3-yard run in the opening quarter.

After the Martinez-to-Gouveia scoring toss, Manteca made it 20-0 in the second quarter on Eddie Smith’s 20-yard run.

Jamontee Jones added a 2-yard touchdown run, increasing the Buffaloes’ lead, 27-0.

Manteca’s final touchdown came on a 22-yard run by Paul Paulino in the fourth quarter.

The Buffaloes will host Edison on Friday.
