During the weekend, Valleri Gammon took a black-and-white photograph of her brother and his fiancé snuggled up against a bright sky back drop.

In her introduction to photography class – Gammon’s instructor is Jack Bland – the Manteca High senior incorporated a double-exposure printing technique, using another photo of book pages atop that of a snap shot of Jerry Gammon and Vanessa Languerand.

For her efforts, she received a first-place ribbon at the MHS Art Show on Wednesday.

“I was really excited,” said Gammon, who was awarded two first-place blue ribbons for two of her photos and a second-place on another piece.

“Before this class, I never took photography,” she added.

Along with photography, the annual MHS Art Show featured the works of students in the advanced and introduction art classes along with those in design, video production, architecture, and the performing arts (band, choir and drama).

Students were awarded best of show – the top prize – and first-, second- and third-place ribbons.

“The top work will be entered into the upcoming district art show,” said Kirt Giovannoni, who teaches the advanced art classes (his students are the same ones recognized for the on-campus mural museum).

A panel of experts served as the art show judges.

According to Giovannoni, the top 12 pieces in introduction to art, advanced art, AP art, and photography will be on display later this month at the district art show.

Students conducted work in the various art genres. Included were paintings, sculptures, dioramas, comics, and prints, to name a few.
