Bereta smashes 2 homers as Sierra tops Spartans

LATHROP — Sierra High sophomore Chelsea Bereta had a day to remember Thursday, as she hit a pair of home runs and pitched a complete-game, one-hitter with seven strikeouts in a 14-1 win over Lathrop.

Bereta’s three-run blast highlighted an eight-run third for the Timberwolves (3-3 Valley Oak League, 8-5-1) .

In the fifth, Bereta and Erica Candido hit back-to-back shots.

All told, Sierra racked up 19 hits, and Daylynn Penner (3 R) and Allison Smith (3 R) both went 3 for 4.

Tyranie Neilson had her first high school knock, drove one in and scored another.

Sierra hosts Sonora today.

Freshman

Sierra 13, Lathrop 8

Briane Lenoci allowed three hits and four earned runs, and knocked three hits, scoring two runs as Sierra improved to 9-1-1 overall and 2-0 in VOL play.

BASEBALL

Freshman

Manteca 13, Sonora 11

Down 10-3 heading in the bottom of the sixth, Manteca responded with a 15-batter, 10-run outpouring that included eight hits, two triples and a double.

Alex Martinez (4 ER, 3 K’s) earned with win after spelling Anthony Hernandez (2 ER) in the third.

Mikey Matthews was 2 for 3 with three runs scored, two RBIs and a double.

Zach Menasco went 2 for 3 with a run scored and four more batted in, and Daniel Miramontes was 2 for 2 with three runs scored, a double and an RBI.

Manteca (6-1 VOL) currently sits atop the VOL standings alongside Sonora.

East Union 13, Central Valley 5

Alex Dias allowed three through five, striking out five, and Brock Swift went 4 for 4 with a double and a triple in the East Union win.

Bryson Stronum was 2 for 3 with three runs scored, and John Olague was 2 for 2 with two runs scored and a double.

EU takes on Tracy Tuesday.

SOCCER

East Union 3, Central Valley 1

Nadia Castillo, Jagjeet Dhillon and Taylor Maruca all scored for the Lancers, while Maruca, Juliana Perez and Stephanie Sabala all had assists.

Kelsey Gormley and Kendra Kaiserman played well at midfield.
