LATHROP — Sonora scored in spurts Friday night, and Lathrop could only answer the first Wildcat touchdown.

Sonora went on to roll to a 49-7 Valley Oak League football victory over the host Spartans.

With the Wildcats (2-0, 4-1 overall) leading 7-0 in the first quarter, Lathrop quarterback Austin Plunk hit David Fonseca with a 60-yard pass. That play set up Plunk’s 15-yard scoring pass to Elijah Cash with 34 seconds left in the first quarter to tie the game at 7.

Then the Wildcats took over.

With 14 seconds left in the first, Brandon Camera scored his second touchdown of the quarter on just his third carry of the night — this one from 71 yards out — to total 105 yards in the opening quarter. Camera finished with 128 yards on eight carries.

The Spartans (0-2, 1-4) squandered away an early scoring opportunity when  Christian Pena returned a kickoff 85 yards, only to have that Lathrop drive stall out at the Sonora 8-yard line.

Leading 14-7, the Wildcats blew the game open at the end of the first half.

Cristian LaPertche scored for Sonora with 1:25 left in the half on a 5-yard run. In the remaining second-quarter time, Karson Canaday scored on a 70-yard punt return and a 21-yard pass from Dylan Fernandes for a 35-7 Sonora lead at halftime.

Fernandes (6 of 9 passing, 93 yards) found Canaday (four receptions, 74 yards) with 6:37 left in the third quarter with a 36-yard touchdown pass, and later in the period Steve Lawrence capped the Wildcats’ scoring parade with a 45-yard run.

Sonora racked up 353 yards on the ground and 93 in the air compared to just 26 on the ground and 83 in the air for Lathrop.
