Balanced Weston Ranch too much for Kimball

TRACY — Tremain Buntan and Donnell Sims each scored a pair of touchdowns for Weston Ranch in a 33-12 Valley Oak League win over Kimball at Don Nicholson Stadium Friday.

“It is coming down to us being in an offensive rhythm,” Weston Ranch coach Mike Hale said. “And with the playoffs looming we are taking it one game at a time. And in this game, our defense really stepped up.”

Buntan – who ground out 158 yards on 17 carries — scored on a 16-yard touchdown run and on a 20-yard pass from James Simerly. Sims (12 carries, 67 yards) added touchdown runs of 10 and 11 yards, and Simerly found Kenny Williams with a 10-yard touchdown pass.

Simerly was 10 of 20 passing for 173 yards, and his favorite target was Oshari Dunn, who made three receptions for 58 yards.

The Cougars improve to 3-3 in the VOL and 4-5 overall while the Jaguars drop to 1-5, 2-7.

Sonora 54, East Union 17

With the Lancers in the game trailing 14-10 after the first quarter, the visiting Wildcats put up 27 second-period points to pull away in their VOL victory.

Joe Menzel provided the bulk of the offense for East Union (1-5, 1-8), completing 19 of 35 passes for 242 yards with a pair of touchdowns. T.J. Williams made five receptions for 75 yards for the Lancers and Diego Castillo three receptions for 43 yards.

Mark Aguilar was a two-pronged threat for East Union, gaining 106 yards on 13 carries and pulling down three receptions for 57 yards.

Sonora improves to 5-1, 7-2.
