RIPON — Women’s tackle football is alive and well thanks to promoters like Aaron and Dineen Goodwin of Ripon and their 45 player roster making up the Modesto Maniax.

It’s something of a family affair with their son Anthony, 20, a Ripon High grad, is  coaching the defensive backs on the team, and daughter Kaylee, 17, a Ripon High School senior,  is  acting as the mascot, “Maxxy.”

Former Manteca High football coach Jeff Watson is doing some coaching as he did at MHS from 1982 to 1985 when the school won four consecutive VOL championships.  Watson played at Manteca High from 1974 to 1977.  He also played for Delta College and for the Arizona Wranglers in 1980.

Two of the Maniax team members are from the Manteca area.  Shannon Sandoval, 35, is playing as a running back and Celeste Pamisan, 19, is from Lathrop.  She is a running back and a middle line bakcer – a grad from Sierra High School.

Co-owner Dineen  Goodwin played women’s tackle football as a center last year,  but had to be sidelined because of a torn ACL, she said.  “I definitely plan on playing next year.” The team she played for disbanded because of economic concerns, she added.

The first of eight league games took place Ssaturday against the Sacramento Sirens at the Modesto Christian High School Stadium.  They are part of the Independent Women’s Football League (IWFL) headquartered out of Texas.

The Ripon owners hope to elevate women’s football in the area by providing “the best opportunity for players and fans”  to enjoy the sport at its highest level.

IWFL chief executive officer Laurie Frederick commented on the new team saying, “This is a really exciting new team.  They have created a solid foundation on which to build women’s football in the San Joaquin Valley.

“With the support they have from their community, this new team is going to do big things,”  she said.
