Manteca District Ambulance is in the process of locating a substation along Airport Way to put 2,700 homes in West Manteca within its targeted five-minute response time.

The district’s third station is being proposed at 15913 Airport Way on the northwest corner of where the roadway crosses the Union Pacific Railroad tracks immediately north of the Manteca Unified School District school farm vineyard.

The purchase of the home and 1.46-acre site was made financially feasible due to plunging home prices. The home that is in escrow is a foreclosure.

The viability of the project hinges on the South San Joaquin Irrigation District board Tuesday giving its approval to a plan to have the ambulance district dedicate a strip of land that is roughly half the size of the parcel – seven-tenths of an acre – to the SSJID.  It would be wide enough for the district’s ditch and access road.

The board meets at 9 a.m. at the district office, 11011 E. Highway 120.

The land dedication would serve as a substitute for the requirement of replacing the existing ditch with a 60-inch diameter pipeline as was required for the Primavera project directly across Airport Way.

In a letter to the SSJID, Manteca District Ambulance Chief Executive Officer Dana Solomon noted it would be cost prohibitive for the non-profit to extend the underground pipe. The district currently has an easement for the ditch and road. The proposal is to simply deed the land involved to the SSJID.

The ambulance district will use the house for crew quarters and the existing garage for employee parking. In addition, a 900-square-foot two-bay ambulance garage will be built.

The community-based non-profit was formed in 1951 when the Manteca Junior Chamber of Commerce and the late Dr. Robert Winter decided the Manteca area needed its own ambulance service.

The ambulance district has 90 employees between its Manteca main station at 245 Center St., its Lathrop location at 800 West J St., and the Tuolumne County division.
