Striking up the band for New Year

Chef Isadore Fang prepares lunch for patrons dining at his upscale Manteca restaurant, Isadore’s, 680 N. Main St.

Chef Isadore Fang enjoys ringing in the New Year with either a nice glass of red wine or sip of Grey Goose.

The latter happens to be premium priced vodka produced in France.

He’s thankful that his Manteca restaurant withstood the recent recession.

“In 2007 or prior to the recession was good times,” Fang recalled fondly of the New Year’s event of that year.

He and his wife, Laurel, are owner and manager of the upscale, fine dining establishment featuring steak, seafood and pasta at 680 N. Main St.

Since 1989 – that’s how many years they’ve been at that location – Isadore and Laurel have rung in the New Year by offering a limited menu with dancing and party favors, from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m.

“This year we’ll have live music – a seven-piece band,” Isadore said last Tuesday.

He has years of experience and knowledge in handling cooking, butchery, wait staff, cost control, and bartending.

Isadore’s plan for 2012 is to dedicate his time to the restaurant, servicing patrons, both new and the regulars.

“I usually put in a good 12 to 14 hours (on New Year’s Eve),” he said.

Besides Grey Goose, Isadore could opt for a nice glass of Cabernet to toast the upcoming year. But chances are pretty good that he’ll shy away from making any resolutions.

“Those are tough since (resolutions) are promises – I can never keep my promise,” he said.

Asked about his perfect dream for the New Year?

Isadore was quick to lean more towards realty.

“I look back at the recession and I just try to be thankful that we’re still here,” he said.
