Leah Ramirez led three Buffaloes in double-digit scoring with 16 points, as Manteca High’s freshman girls basketball team downed rival and 14th Annual Lady Timberwolves Rotary Classic host Sierra 54-40 Saturday.

Manteca will battle for the consolation championship Monday, 6 p.m. at Sierra’s small gym.

Karlesha Thompson and Jessica Reeder poured in 14 apiece to aid Manteca’s victory.

Kelly Paredes paced the Timberwolves with 13 points. Lia Unterholzner finished with 11 points, four steals and five blocks.

The triumphant Indians sealed the victory with a key offensive rebound and two converted free throws in the final minute.

East Union was led by TeeJay Gordon’s 17 points.

The Timberwolves (3-5) had a balanced scoring effort with Grant Widmer, Jerod Patton and Maurico Roberts each pumping in eight points, but Sierra was unable to get the job done on the defensive end.

“We can’t give up 56 points and expect to win many games,” Sierra coach Justin Muschott said. “We need to be committed to playing good team defense to have a chance against teams like Edison.”

The Pages avenged their season-opening loss with their blowout victory over Ripon Christian.

Brandon Cline led East Union with 11 points, Wayne Cheung turned in 10, Brock Swift added eight and Josh Bonds contributed seven points and seven rebounds.

“The kids really wanted to win after losing to them by one in overtime,” East Union coach Brett Lewis said. “They didn’t want to lose to them again.”

East Union squares off with either tournament host Manteca or Tracy Monday at 3:30 p.m.
