MISSOURI TEEN PLEADS GUILTY TO KILLING 9-YEAR-OLD GIRL: JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) — Alyssa Bustamante looked down, her long brown hair covering her teenage eyes, as a judge read the charges against her: murder and armed criminal action, for knowingly strangling, cutting and stabbing her 9-year-old neighbor.
For more than two years after she was arrested as a high school sophomore, Bustamante had been publicly silent about the gruesome crime, which a patrol officer testified she confessed to committing because "she wanted to know what it felt like." On Tuesday, it was her time to talk.
SNOW LOCKED TOWN HAS SHOVEL SHORTAGE: ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — An Alaska community blitzed by nearly 15 feet of snow was hit by another storm Tuesday and a new problem — a shortage of shovels.
A spokesman for the city of Cordova said officials had tried Anchorage, Fairbanks and other cities and finally turned to a manufacturer for a special order.
"It's ironic, isn't it? The state of Alaska — you'd think they'd be ahead of the game. It's those logistical things you just don't plan on, or you don't think is going to be an issue," said Allen Marquette by phone from the city on the east side of Prince William Sound.
The snow-weary city of 2,200 was promised new shovels to be manufactured Thursday and delivered two days later — but it will be too late for the "couple more feet" of snow that touched down Tuesday, accompanied by winds of 25 to 40 mph and gusts to 55.
KAN. WOMAN PLEADS IN BABY'S HAIR DRYER DEATH: HUTCHINSON, Kan. (AP) — A Kansas woman who left a hair dryer running to warm her infant daughter on a freezing night has pleaded no contest to involuntary manslaughter in the baby's death.
Brigit Hippen, of Hutchinson, had been scheduled to go on trial Tuesday for a second time on a charge of second-degree murder. Instead, she pleaded to the lesser charge in Reno County District Court.
Hippen faces roughly three to 11 years in prison. She'll be sentenced Feb. 24 — two years and one day after 2-month-old Karina Perez died of hyperthermia.
Hippen told investigators she placed a running hair dryer near Karina's bassinet to warm the baby, then fell asleep. Doctors have said Karina's temperature was 108 when she died.
MAN SLAIN WHILE RESCUING GRANDFATHER FROM ROBBERS: LOS ANGELES (AP) — A man was shot to death while trying to stop his grandfather from being robbed, police said Tuesday.
Danilo Estuardo Morales, 24, was shot in the head while chasing the robbers Monday evening outside a North Hollywood home, a police statement said.
Three males between 15 and 20 years old fled in a white Mitsubishi Montero SUV.
The 60-year-old robbery victim had parked his car at the rear of a residence. He was walking to the house along a long driveway that wasn't well lit when he was confronted by the three men, investigators said.
The grandfather yelled, drawing the attention of his grandson.
According to KTTV, the thieves were able to grab the grandfather's wallet and a necklace, and they got into the SUV. The grandson broke the rear window and was shot when he approached a side window, according to police.
2 BOYS, 10, ACCUSED OF SEX ASSAULT ON HOUSTON BUS: HOUSTON (AP) — Houston police say two 10-year-old boys have been charged with sexually assaulting an 8-year-old boy on a school bus that transports special needs students.
The boys were arrested last week after authorities reviewed a security videotape from the bus.
If convicted on charges of aggravated sexual assault of a child, they could face a sentence of up to 40 years
