Veronica Duarte tasted sweet success last year.

This time, she is part of the effort to find her successor as the winner of Christian Worship Center’s annual Cupcake War competition.

Judging will be held Saturday, Feb. 18, in the Fellowship Hall of the church located at 786 Button Avenue.

There will be cash prizes plus merchandise and/or gift certificates awarded to the first-prize winners in the two contest categories: Best Tasting and Best Decorated cupcake. Merchandise prizes and certificates will be awarded to the runners-up.

There will be two types of competitions - the Youthful Baker which is open to those between the ages of 9 and 16, and the Baking Enthusiast for both men and women age 17 and older.

Each contestant has to fill out an entry form which must be submitted by Feb. 4 along with a $10 non-refundable entry fee, said Duarte who is serving as the coordinator of the competition this year.

A panel of four judges will select the winners, two of whom will be professional chefs. One of the professional chefs is Terrance Braxton, owner of At Home Gourmet Kitchen in Modesto. They are still trying to confirm the second chef, Duarte said. The remaining two will be two women from Edwards’ Cake & Candy Supply, “the only supply store in Modesto for cake products,” said Duarte whose claim to fame is being the first winner of this annual competition. Her prize was a baking set.

To be a contestant in this second annual Cupcake War, one need not be a member of Christian Worship Center, Duarte noted.

There will be other events and attractions scheduled the day of the Cupcake War competition, she added. These include a cupcake eating contest, testimonies, as well as raffles and prizes. Duarte will be among those sharing their faith testimonies.

There will be a food court available also, but no outside food or drinks will be allowed. Featured will be various bakeries in the community and cupcake shops which will have cupcakes available for purchase.

Entry forms for the cupcake competition are available for download at www.cwcmanteca.org.
