Weston Ranch’s boys basketball team still owns bragging rights over Modesto Christian after edging the Crusaders 69-68 Saturday in Salida.

The thrilling nonleague contest was decided by 6-foot-7 Daiveon Leverett’s dunk with 2 seconds to go, capping a big second-half comeback by the Cougars (17-6). Modesto Christian (19-5) led 43-30 at halftime.

Leverett finished with 12 points and eight rebounds. Dylan Alexander paced Weston Ranch with 24 points, and Andre Beard added 19 points, seven rebounds and five assists.

Raymond Bowles, Modesto Christian’s talented 6-4 guard, led all players with 31 points, while East Union transfer Tyras Rattler pitched in 10.

Weston Ranch previously downed the Crusaders in overtime, 79-77, in the third-place game of the Modesto Christian Holiday Hoops Classic. Last year’s nonleague meeting was won by the Cougars, 89-84, also in overtime.
