Jazmin Strane produced 19 points and 22 rebounds in Weston Ranch’s 66-56 girls basketball win at Sonora Wednesday.

A.J. Brown added 16 points, eight rebounds and eight steals. Tyler Swycinsky scored 16 points to pace Sonora (5-6 Valley Oak League, 13-9 overall).

Weston Ranch (9-2, 18-6) blew open a 42-22 halftime lead but struggled to maintain the effective play in the second half.

“It was a tale of two halves,” said Weston Ranch coach Chris Bauer. “In the second half Sonora came out and completely outplayed us. We just have to do a better job of staying ready and finishing the game.”

It was a big win for the Cougars, who closed to within a game of VOL-leading East Union. East Union lost to Kimball Wednesday, 43-35.

Sierra 55, Oakdale 36

Led by Celine Barber’s 15 points, the Timberwolves (3-8, 5-18) put forth their best start-to-finish effort of the season against last-place Oakdale.

Sierra took a 16-6 lead into the second quarter and stretched it to 28-13 by halftime. Asia Cortez ended up with 12 points, and center Lia Unterholzner chipped in with 11.

“It was an all-around good game for us,” said Coach Steve Unterholzner. “The last time we played them we didn’t have a good start, so this time we made a commitment to start off strong and they did.”

Trans-Valley League
