STOCKTON — In a wonderful blend of two religious traditions, the Jewish Rabbi Jason Gwasdoff of Temple Israel recently met with a roomful of Christian students at St. Mary’s High School.

Unusual? Maybe. But the Rabbi’s teaching visit was of tremendous value to the 40 St. Mary’s Theatre students who attended and are busily preparing for their Spring musical production Fiddler on the Roof, playing March 8-18 at the Long Theatre on the U.O.P. campus. Set in 1905 Czarist Russia, this Broadway classic tells the story of Tevye and his family, as they attempt to balance Jewish traditions with family desires and the encroachment of outside influences. Winner of 9 Tony Awards in 1965 including Best Musical, Best Score and Best Book, Fiddler on the Roof has something for everyone: drama, comedy, dancing, and some of Broadway’s all-time favorite songs, including “Tradition,” “Matchmaker,” “If I Were a Rich Man,” “Sunrise, Sunset”  and many others.

“I am amazed at how timeless this story is,” said director Kevin Costello, “Even though Fiddler  was written nearly 50 years ago and takes place over 100 years ago, the themes are remarkably relevant in today’s world. People of all ages can relate to this show, and I’m excited for the community to see our talented students present it!”

The Musical Director for the production is Elizabeth Hodgdon, with choreography by Evelyn Barney and Nina Thiel. Performances at the Long Theatre are March 8 (7 p.m.), March 9 (8 p.m.), March 10 (8 p.m.), March 11 (2 p.m.), 15 (7 p.m.), March 16 (8 p.m.), March 17 (2 and 8 p.m.) and March 18 (2 p.m.). Ticket prices are $15 for adults and $10 for students, children and seniors.

Tickets may be purchased online at estockton.com or at the St. Mary’s High School main office, 5648 N. El Dorado Street, during regular business hours. For more information call 957-3340, Ext. 250.
