Senior night can lead to some quirky lineups.

Such was the case in Ripon High’s Trans-Valley League boys basketball finale against visiting Orestimba Thursday.

The Indians overcame a poor start and blew past the Warriors, 65-44.

Usual power forward Conner Jones started at point guard, and Ripon (8-4, 15-12 overall) trailed 10-9 after the first quarter.

“We had no guards for the first few minutes of the game,” Ripon coach Rod Wright said.

Orestimba (1-11, 3-24) managed to stay within striking distance with Ripon’s full complement of starters in the game, down just 22-21 with about 1:30 to go in the half. The Indians closed with a 10-0 run, and the rout was on.

Senior center Jake McCreath finished with 14 points, and guard Cole Herrin checked in with 12.

The win is the seventh in Ripon’s last eight contests. The Indians are going into the postseason hot, and the Sac-Joaquin Section’s Division IV tournament is expected to be a wide-open race.

“The best part about it is we’re still getting better,” Wright said. “We’re getting guys back from injuries, everyone understands their roles and their hard work is paying off. I think we’re starting to peak at the right time.”

Nine of 10 Indians scored, but doing the most damage was sophomore post Morgan Carrico with 23 points. Point guard Ruth Waters added 12. Orestimba (0-12, 4-20) showed some fight early on, trailing 29-17 at half before succumbing to a 24-2 backbreaking third-quarter run.

Ripon (8-4, 18-8) snapped a three-game losing streak with the win, which will likely assure it a first-round playoff game next week in the Sac-Joaquin Section Division IV bracket.
