RIPON — It’s illegal to drive with red lights on a car – it’s even more foolish to do it in front of a police officer driving his beat and having drugs and drug paraphernalia in the vehicle.

Ripon Police Officer Gordon West made a traffic stop on a vehicle in the 300 block of East Main Street after noticing illegal red lighting coming from the sides and undercarriage of a Lincoln Town Car.

Police spokesman First Sergeant Steve Merchant said the driver had admitted having marijuana in the car but a search of the vehicle discovered heroin, syringes, anabolic steroids and controlled substance paraphernalia.

Michael Anthony Engle, 20, of Ripon, was taken into custody on a felony charge and transported to the San Joaquin County Jail in French Camp, police said.

Stolen car pursuit ends in Ripon

RIPON — It was just two hours after a car had been stolen in Modesto Saturday afternoon, that Ripon officers engaged in a pursuit that sent a woman driver to jail on three felony charges with a bail set at $271,075.

Patrolman Anthony DeMarinis stopped Cassandra Marie Lipsky, 23, of Salida for an alleged vehicle code violation, according to police spokesman First Sergeant Steve Merchant.

Lipsky then fled the scene in a Toyota Camry in the 1500 block of West Fourth Street leading the officer on a one-mile chase, Merchant said.  As three other patrol units converged on the chase, the driver pulled into a parking lot after she was confronted by the other units.

Merchant said she was arrested for allegedly driving with a wanton disregard for public safety throughout the pursuit and for the possession of stolen property. She was transported to the San Joaquin County Jail in French Camp.

Her court date was set for today at 1:25 p.m. at the Manteca Branch of the San Joaquin County Superior Court.
