CERES - The Weston Ranch Cougars have opened the season opening eyes, continuing the early-season trend with a pair of victories to closeout play in the Ceres Tournament Saturday.

The Cougars blanked Summerville 8-0 before edging out Modesto High 7-6.

Sophomore Arianna Hernandez is playing a prominent role in the Cougars (6-1) success, tossing all but two innings in the Ceres tournament and dominating Summerville with a no-hitter.

Hernandez also helped her cause from the plate, going 2-for-2 with two RBI. Teammate Vanessa Contreras also went 2-for-2, driving in three and hitting a triple.

“We had a great tourney and it was good for our kids,” Weston Ranch head coach Janelle Bauer said. “It was definitely a team effort and Arianna threw a couple of really good games.

“We’re looking forward to the season getting underway.”

Alexandera Alvarado was the difference against Modesto High, going 2-for-3 with two RBI and a double. Mia Thurman was also 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Sierra 4, Johansen 2

Hughson 3, Sierra 1

An untimely error late in the game was the difference in Sierra’s first loss of the season.

Hughson broke a 1-1 tie plating two and held the Timberwolves scoreless in their final at-bat. The Timberwolves were able to take care of eventual pool champion Johansen, beating the Vikings 4-2.

Allison Walljasper handled the pitching in both contests, striking out 12 in a one-hit gem against Johansen. Walljasper had 14 strikeouts against Hughson and also was 2-for-3 with Sierra’s lone RBI.

Iyana Hughes was 2-for-3 in the win with a double, while teammate Katelyn Salsedo also banged out two hits and drove in two. Salsedo was 2-for-3 against Hughson.
