Argentine dance leading tango workshops April 14 in Modesto

MODESTO — Marcelo Solis, a judge for the USA branch of the Argentine Tango World Cup competition, returns to lead two workshops and perform at a milonga (Argentine tango dance party) on Saturday, April 14, at Jacobs Fine Dining, 2501 McHenry Ave.

Solis, a “milonguero,” Argentine Tango dancer, choreographer and instructor  started to dance Argentine tango at age 20 and  specializes in the traditional music of the ‘30s and ‘40s.

He teaches the style of Buenos Aires dance halls, focusing on the connection between partners and music - exercises and explanations that convey tango fundamentals. He has taught and performed in Argentina, USA, Canada and Europe. Currently based in San Francisco, he returns to his native Buenos Aires several times a year to teach and give exhibitions at some of the most important milongas.

He will teach all levels at 2:30 p.m., intermediates at 4 p.m. Modesto Tango’s evening milonga at Jacobs will begin with an introductory class at 7:30 p.m. and open dancing at 8:30 p.m.

Solis, and his partner, Olga Matveeva, will perform at 10 p.m.

Solis was a finalist in the 1994 Argentine national traditional stage championship and 2010 salon dance style in Buenos Aires.

The fee  is $20 for one class, $35 for both, $10 for the milonga (lesson and dance) or $5 for the dance alone. Participants will be able to order food and beverage throughout the evening.
