More than $600 dollars in prizes will be awarded at this weekend’s 5th Annual Photography Contest and Show jointly sponsored by the Manteca and Tracy Camera clubs.

The competition is open to amateur photographers only. The organizers’ definition of an amateur photographer is “one who cultivates any study of art without pursuing it professionally.”

Entries are still being accepted today from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Manteca Senior Center, 295 Cherry Lane, where the entries will be open for public viewing Saturday and Sunday, May 16 and 17, from noon to 4 p.m.

Awards will be given out to the lucky winners on Sunday after the show.

Prizes include: $40 for Best of Show, $25 for the People’s Choice award, $25 for the first-place winner in the adult category and $25 in the child category, $20 for the Adult second-place winner and $15 for the child winner, and $15 and $10 for the third place winner in the Adult and Child categories, respectively.

The above prizes will be presented to the winners in the four categories of the competition: color, black and white or toned, creative/computer-altered, and children’s (all). All four categories will be judged separately. In addition to the cash awards, ribbons and certificates will be given to the winners.

A special Founder’s Award also will be given in honor of the late Clarese Anderson, artist and photographer who founded the Manteca Camera Club with a handful of avid photographers sometime in the late 1970s, early 1980s.
Entry fees are $5 per adult entry, and $2 per children’s entry. All photos entered must be mounted on a suitable backing; no frames.

Photographers may choose to sell their photos if they choose to do so, said Manteca Camera Club president Lyn Price.

This year’s featured main judges are Pulitzer Prize winner and San Francisco Chronicle photographer Kim Komenich, a Manteca High School graduate who was among the group formed by Anderson, and Manteca Bulletin city editor Rose Albano Risso whose photographs have won awards in a number of photography magazine competitions and at the annual Lathrop Mayor’s Art Purchase Award Show and Sale.

In addition to judging the show, Komenich will present a 20-minute talk-and-teach presentation about color, composition and photo judging starting at 8 a.m. on Saturday. He will be conducting his presentation while judging the entries. The public is invited. Admission is free.

Entries must be no smaller than 5”x7” and no larger than 11”x14” or 16”x20” including mat.
