FRENCH CAMP – State Sen. Lois Wolk is no stranger to Manteca Unified.

Earlier this year, the representative of the Fifth Senate District – that includes Manteca, Stockton, and Tracy in San Joaquin County; Suisun City, Fairfield, Dixon and Vacaville in Solano County; Davis, West Sacramento, Winters and Woodland in Yolo County; and Walnut Grove and a portion of Elk Grove in Sacramento County – made a special visit to McParland School after being inspired by the efforts of two fifth-grade students there.

Wolk returned back to the area on Friday, kicking off the morning by enjoying scones and beverages whipped up by the Stella Brockman School students who operate the on-campus café. She also toured the kindergarten-through-eighth-grade site before making a quick stop at the new administration building.

“We took a look at the school farm from my (third floor) office window,” said Superintendent Jason Messer, who also joined the senator at French Camp School.

Dillon Delvo, Wolk’s senior field representative, indicated that Wolk’s visit was made possible via discussions with Trustee Evelyn Moore.

“She talked about some of the positive things (involving students) in Manteca Unified,” Delvo said.

Included was the turnaround of French Camp, which, a few years ago, had become a program improvement site.

Since the restructuring, the school, a recipient of the district’s Title I funds, continues to make great strides come state testing time.

Wolk was joined by school officials – included were Principal Joanne Balestreri, Vice Principal Maria Fisicaro, and peer coach Lesley Fontanilla – along with Messer and Cheryl Meeker, senior director of elementary education and curriculum.

A former teacher, Wolk received a tour of the school. She even made a brief stop to observe the junior high talent show.

Wolk was also scheduled to visit Lodi later that day, according to Delvo.
