STOCKTON — Stockton Civic Theatre’s Artistic Director has cast the final production of the 2011-2012 season, “Sweeney Todd, The Demon Barber of Fleet Street,” scheduled to open at SCT on June 27.

This great musical score is a 1979 musical thriller with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim.  The musical is based on the 1973 play by Christopher Bond.

Set in 19th century England, the musical tells the story of Benjamin Barker, alias Sweeney Todd, who returns to London after 15 years’ transportation on trumped charges. When he finds out that his wife poisoned herself after being raped by the judge who transported him, he vows revenge on the judge and later, the whole world. He teams up with a pie maker, Mrs. Lovett, and opens a barbershop in which he slits the throats of customers and has them baked into pies.

The musical boasts an extensive cast.  Coleman has cast the following in principal roles: Kevin Costello as Sweeney Todd, Randi Linee as Mrs. Lovett, Jacob Bronson as Tobias Rigg, Thomas Smith as Anthony Hope, Joy Clark as Johanna, Martin Lehman as Judge Turpin, Donovan D. Ott-Bales as Beadle, Elizabeth Costello as Beggar Woman, Paul Kimball as Pirelli, Joseph Toon as Jonas Fogg, and Christopher Slaughter as Birdseller.  There are 24 people cast in ensemble roles.

“Sweeney Todd” will run starting Wednesday, June 27, concluding on Sunday, July 22. For more information, call the Box Office Tuesday-Friday, 9 a.m. to  2 p.m. at (209) 473-2424, or go online at sctlivetheatre.com.
