The power of prayer drives in sales

Sales started out sluggish at Phil Waterford’s Manteca Ford & Exotic High Line last weekend as the rain and the wind kept most people indoors. When Phil Waterford arrived at his North Main Street Ford dealership his showroom was filled with customers. However, they had no sales reported for the day.

Waterford asked all of his sales representatives and managers to excuse themselves from their customers for just a few minutes so that they could meet in his newly-renovated conference room.

Waterford asked all of his staff to hold hands with every eye closed and every head bowed, and he said a short prayer. Waterford prayed with his team and asked God “any person that comes to our dealership, our prayer is that they will receive a good deal and a fair price.” He also prayed that, “all of our needs would be met as we continue to conduct business in a fair and ethical way.”

The energy in the dealership changed instantly. Less than half an hour later, the dealership sold 3 cars. After 45 minutes, the sales grew to 6 and by the end of the day Manteca Ford sold a record of 12 cars. “This was one of the best single selling days that we’ve experienced in years” exclaimed Waterford, “all praises to God!”

After reviewing all of the transactions from the weekend, Waterford noticed that one of his customers purchased a pre-owned car for more money than what a new car would have cost after rebates and incentives from the manufacturer.

“Sometimes it’s just better to purchase a new car,” explained Waterford. So he decided to contact the customer and give them an option to save thousands of dollars on a brand-new vehicle and return the pre-owned vehicle back to the dealership.

This customer was surprised that the owner of the dealership contacted him personally, and was grateful for the additional savings.

Waterford knew that his prayers were finally answered. “Although there was a loss of revenue from the previous transaction, my prayer in the true sense of the words was answered as I asked that every person who comes in this dealership receives a good deal and a fair price.”

Waterford said that he tries to keep his overhead expenses down so that Manteca Ford can offer the best prices in the Central Valley on any new Ford, certified pre-owned, exotic high line or economy vehicles. “We have cars that are safe and have been completely reconditioned that are offered for sale to the public for as low as $2,988.”

The dealership also offers financing with an array of banks and credit unions that understand that sometimes bad things happen to good people. Finance Director Robert Eichman said, “Our goal is 100% credit approval.”

General Sales Manager Jeff Houghton said, “All of our needs are met month after month. Any additional revenue that we acquire we try to give back to the community in many different ways. We truly appreciate the support from those who purchase parts, utilize our service department and Quick Lane facility and give us an opportunity to earn business on the purchase of a new or pre-owned vehicle.”
