Manteca resident Michael Lamb has decided to travel the United States with his wife Jody after she retires this year from the Manteca Unified School District.

Lamb is a Vietnam veteran who served for 28 years in the United States Air Force as an aircraft mechanic. He spent over 20 years traveling to the Middle East on various missions and now wants to enjoy our country. His stint in the Air Force included 4 years of active duty and 24 years of service in the reserves with the California Air National Guard. He was deployed to Vietnam during active duty and completed missions in Desert Shield, Desert Storm, Southern Watch, Northern Watch and Iraqi Freedom. He started working at Moffat Naval Air Station in Mountain View, working on C-130 aircraft over 22 years ago.

One of the most challenging aspects of his job was keeping airplanes flying that were manufactured in 1965. Lamb says that he would often find structural problems with the air frame. His job was to make extensive repairs to compensate for the weakness in the aircraft. The C-130 was designed to carry fuel tanks for in-flight refueling of helicopters and other aircraft. It also performed the tactical portion of the airlift mission. The aircraft is capable of operating from rough, dirt strips and is the primary transport for airdropping troops and equipment into hostile areas.

“If these aircraft weren’t ready to fly and perform missions, the entire mission would have to be postponed,” Lamb recalls. “It’s been an honor to serve our country. I was just doing my job”. Now it’s time to have fun. Lamb has many hobbies. He enjoys spending time with his wife, working on cars, riding and repairing motorcycles. He is also a pilot.

He purchased a Ford F-150 Supercrew 4x4 Lariat from Manteca Ford so that he and his wife could go camping, hunting, fishing, hiking and enjoy the freedom that he has been fighting for the past 28 years.
