East Union was on the cusp of scoring a big upset in a Valley Oak League makeup game with Kimball Monday at Northgate Softball Complex.

The Lancers led 4-1 through four innings but fell apart en route to a 7-6 loss.

Kimball (10-2, 18-4 overall), which is trying to keep pace with league-leading Oakdale, took advantage of four late errors to come back. The Jaguars scored two runs in the fifth and jumped ahead with a four-run outburst in the sixth, but they were not in the clear yet.

East Union (5-7, 12-11) threatened in the bottom of the seventh but left two base runners stranded after plating a run.

Offense was not the issue for either team, as they combined for 24 hits. Cherish Burks went 3 for 4 with a double and two runs scored to lead the Lancers from the top of the order. Jillian Costa also had three knocks, including a triple, and two runs. Laura Gann went 2 for 3.

Arianna Hawkins paced Kimball with a 3-for-3 effort that included two RBIs and two runs.

East Union heads to Weston Ranch today before wrapping up the season at home against Lathrop on Thursday.
