RIPON - A black Nissan parked outside a Ripon motel displaying false registration shortly after midnight Tuesday was all that Ripon Police officer Stephen Meece needed to sniff out a double arrest on drug charges.

Meece had been conducting a security check at the Blu-Lite Motel as part of the department’s ongoing motel interdiction effort aimed at combating drugs and prostitution.

Ripon officers then kept the area adjacent to the Frontage Road under surveillance for several hours.

Shortly before 4 a.m. two men drove to the Flying J Truck Stop on Jack Tone Road where patrolmen made a traffic stop. One of the men in the vehicle was found to be on active parole and officers confirmed they were both staying at the same motel.

Leon Guy Krigbaum, 30, of Modesto was found to be on active parole and was taken into custody along with his accomplice Michael Curtis McDowell, 33, also of Modesto.

Krigbaum was transported to San Joaquin County Jail in French Camp where he is being held on a “no bail” parole hold. He was also charged with possession of a narcotic controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance and for possession of drug paraphernalia as well as suspicion of being under the influence of a controlled substance.

McDowell’s charges included possession of a narcotic controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance, possession of controlled substance paraphernalia, false registration and for being under the influence of a controlled substance. His bail was set at $26,500.

Both men are scheduled to appear at the Manteca branch of the San Joaquin County Superior Court at 1:30 on Thursday.
