A different kind of sports bar and grill opens in Lathrop

LATHROP – A restaurant franchiser is born in Lathrop. In the next few years, perhaps even months, you’ll probably be hearing more about Texas Buffalo Wings Sports Bar and Grill.

The business is the brainchild of brothers A.J.  and Hardev Khinda who are both involved hands-on in the operation and management of Lathrop’s newest dining place located in the new three-story building that the siblings constructed next to the Holiday Inn Express and just across the street from ITT Tech on South Harlan Road.

“They are franchising this business out. This is franchise Number 1. They have franchises now in the works – one in Canada and maybe one in Sacramento – and they have other people looking into opening in their areas,” said Darlene Machado who works for the U.S. Food Service.

“I helped develop their menu and put their product together to make sure they have all the policies and procedures in place to be successful,” Machado said.

While the restaurant’s name only mentions buffalo wings, that’s just one of the many varied menu offerings at this newest dining place on the east side of Interstate 5.

“We have all kinds of hamburgers and steak, soup and salad, appetizers, and we also have a meal for kids that we call buckaroo meal,” said younger brother A.J. Khinda.

And, of course, he said, “we have (buffalo) wings but it’s totally different. It’s not fast-food style; it’s restaurant-style. We prep everything here; it’s not something frozen,” A.J. said.

In fact, they offer several flavors of buffalo wings for every palate.

“We have habanero, lemon pepper, garlic, teriyaki, barbecue and garlic parmagianna. If somebody wants something hot, we have the habanero,” he said.

Similarly, they offer a long list of appetizers such as rodeo nacho, jalapeno peppers, cheese sticks, garlic fries, potato skins, onion rings and curly fries which, said A.J., they prefer to call “tornado fries.”

And those are the things that make this new food franchiser different from the rest of the gastronomical crowd.

“What’s unique about Texas Bar and Grill is that they are not just Texas buffalo wings; it’s a bar and grill. They have something for everyone. Their main item is the buffalo wings but they also have prime rib, if you want a nice steak. And they have shrimp scampi, chicken alfredo – and they have vegetarian things – veggie burger, grilled veggie Philly steak, Caesar salad, fresh garden salad. We have fresh fruit – we have a variety of sides to choose from.  We also have a little dessert fountain with chocolate lava cake a la mode, banana splits and root beer floats. Plus, we have beer and wine – we have everything. Families with kids can just come and have dinner here. You’ll find something for everyone,” Machado said, getting almost breathless as she rattled off the wide array of food choices on the restaurant’s menu.

Diners can opt to sit in traditional-style dining tables and booths or on high wooden stools at the bar. But wherever customers are seated, there’s a high-definition flat-screen television where they can follow sports games and other programs.

Hardev Khinda said they also have banquet rooms available for meetings or events such as birthday celebrations where they can accommodate up to 100 people.

Wanted to bring something different to Lathrop
Older brother Hardev Khinda said they picked Lathrop for their restaurant business for one reason: “I just wanted to bring something different in Lathrop.”

Added younger brother A.J. about Lathrop, “It’s a small town by the freeway, a very nice location,” plus this area of town is a food mecca.

This small business enclave just outside the Lathrop Business Park and just north of Crossroads Commerce Center and Industrial Park on South Harlan Road is already home to a number of eating destinations from fast-food to sit-down fare: McDonald’s, Jack-In-The-box, Carl’s Jr., the co-branded Kentucky Fried Chicken and A&W, Taco Bell, and Denny’s. It’s South Harlan-Louise’s answer to North Harlan-Lathrop Road’s cluster of dining destinations – Starbuck’s, Sicily Pizza, Mikasa Japanese Bistro, a taqueria and Baskin & Robbins Ice Cream in the Save Mart shopping center, and Bella’s Bakery and a Chinese restaurant in the corner gas station on the north side of Lathrop Road.

The building where Texas Buffalo Wings stands on a lot previously owned by the Community Banks of Northern California. The bank changed its mind about opening a branch at this location and, instead, opened its branch at Mossdale Landing in a new building complex on the east side of City Hall on Towne Centre Drive.

The restaurant and a travel agency occupy the ground floor of the three-story High 5 Building. The upper rooms are available for offices.

The Texas Buffalo Wings is not the Khinda brothers’ first business foray in Lathrop. Several years ago, they purchased the Circle K neighborhood commercial center on the northeast corner of Louise Avenue and Cambridge Drive from the Phillips family which built this strip mall in the late 1970s for their residential subdivision project which is comprised of the homes from the east side of Cambridge, O Street to the north, and Warfield to the west.

The Khinda brothers are throwing a grand opening for their Texas Buffalo Wings today from 5:30 to 7 p.m. with the Lathrop Chamber of  Commerce conducting a ribbon-cutting ceremony. Mayor Kristy Sayles and other members of the City Council, as well as representatives from the Lathrop Police Services, the Lathrop-Manteca Fire District, Rotary, Eagle’s Nest Harley Davidson and other groups are expected to attend.
